The Lost Art of Letter Writing

The Art of Letter Writing...has not much to do with baking, but during the summer months, I wish to write about this disappearing art.   For hundreds of years, or at least since pens and paper became commonplace, people who wanted to get in touch with other people separated by distance had...

A Short Story...

-Plain Living

In the 1600's William Penn (1644-1718), the founder of Pennsylvania, struggled during his conversion from English aristocrat to plain Quaker.

Legend has it that when William Penn asked pacifist George Fox, the founder of the Quakers, what to do about carrying his sword, Fox replied, "Wear it as long as thee can." George Fox believed that William would know when it was time to choose a plainer and more peaceful way of living.

Later on, according to a journal, William was horseback riding with a Quaker Friend when he "suddenly pulled off his (courtly) wig, dropped it on the road, and did not look back to see what became of it."

When we listen within, we too may hear an invitation to lay down our encumbered lifestyle.

Signing of the Declaration of Independence...July 4, 1776

The Declaration of Independence introduced a fundamental change in the view of government. Thomas Jefferson declared that governments were created to serve the people, and could only act with consent of the people. It created the democratic government.

The declaration consisted of two parts. The preamble describes the peoples rights and it states that " all Men are created equal" and have the God-given right to "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness." The second part declares independence from Britain, and lists the colonies' issues against the British government.

Willkommen…

For some time, it has been my yearning to establish a web-site to display and sell my baked goods. All of the items you will find on this site are home-made, with the finest, natural ingredients available, most of which are organic. I presently offer breads of various sorts, cookies, a coffee cake and pies are forth-coming, all baked with lots of care and well packaged.

I have baked and sold my items for many years, all with great satisfaction and repeat orders. In May of 2008, Rachels’ Bakery provided many of the items for a non-profit organization (see attached letter), which were well received.

I sincerely wish that you also will enjoy the items sold on this site, and will bring many smiles to those around your table.
